Google, SayNow, and Twitter team up to make Tweeting from Egypt possible via voicemail

Google’s announced on its official blog a small project they’ve quickly cobbled together to help Egyptians (who –in the midst of protests — are having serious connectivity issues) communicate via Twitter . With almost no connection to the internet through normal channels, Google has made it possible for anyone to send a Tweet simply by dialing one of several international phone numbers (+16504194196, +390662207294 or +97316199855) and leaving a voicemail. What happens next?

Egyptians rely on dial up services

Up to 30 old school dial-up Internet services are currently being offered to Egyptians as people living in the beleaguered country intends to work around the government’s shutdown of the Web. That is what the French Data Network is reporting anyways, after Internet traffic in that part of the world was basically clamped down last Friday after demonstrators decided to organize protests in the streets of Cairo by demanding the ouster of President Hosni Mubarak. The country has since retaliated by stepping up their military presence in civilian areas and cutting off communications – but hey, the people can still send tweets via making a standard phone call thanks to Google, now how about that

Hackers increasingly using telnet for attacks, port 23 looking younger than ever

You can’t always just hang around waiting for the next big Microsoft security update . Sometimes you have to go and make your own destiny — even if it means probing a few dusty ports. That’s apparently the mantra of modern hackers who are, according to Akamai, increasingly looking back at telnet as a means to gain unapproved access to systems of all shapes and sizes.

UN: worldwide internet users hit two billion, cellphone subscriptions top five billion

The UN’s International Telecommunication Union predicted last fall that the number of internet users worldwide would hit two billion by the end of 2010, and it’s now issued its full report that confirms just that — 2.08 billion, to be specific. As the ITU’s Hamadoun Toure notes, that number represents a huge leap from the mere 250 million internet users that existed a decade ago, and it means that roughly one third of the world’s population now has internet access of some sort — of those, 555 million have a fixed broadband subscription, and 950 million have mobile broadband. Just as impressive as that (if not moreso), are the number of cellphone subscriptions worldwide, which has now crossed the five billion mark.

Egypt enters communication blackout with disruption to internet, SMS, and BlackBerry messaging

We don’t know what exactly is going on over in Egypt, but the country’s government seems to have decided that keeping in touch with the outside world is no longer desirable and has almost completely shut down internet, SMS, and BlackBerry communications. It’s not surprising, therefore, that reports are emerging in rather piecemeal form at the moment, though Renesys has hard data showing that almost all routes for exchanging internet traffic with the country have been shut down, with only Noor Group excepted from the block — a move the internet analytics company theorizes might have been motivated by a desire to keep the Egyptian Stock Exchange online. The reasons for this blackout remain open to speculation and interpretation — most of which, we remind you, has better destinations than your favorite tech blog — but its content is clearly an extreme step for any government to take.
