Challenge HAL from Cyberdyne helps you get around again

[CES 2011] Cyberdyne demonstrated their really interesting assistive technology known as the Challenge HAL. HAL, a Hybrid Assistive Limb, will sense your intention and provide the relevant assistance at the right joints, where it will definitely come in handy when helping the less able out in daily activities such as exercise, recuperative therapy, medical care and welfare fields. Not only that, if I had something like this to wear, it will definitely provide me with the necessary boost and motivation for exercise on a daily basis – wouldn’t you want to be the talk of town while getting around this?

Telepresence teachers in Korean classrooms to increase next year

Korean officials are pretty happy with the success of their educational robotics program which was recently completed successfully in the form of a 14-week pilot program. All 29 robots that were placed across 21 schools, costing $1.4 million in total, will help supplement language lessons by native speakers in order to check on a student’s progress

Nao robot receives a much sexier body

Aldebaran Robotics’ latest version of their Nao robot made an impact at the Humanoids 2010 conference in Atlanta, where Nao’s body has been re-engineered to look a whole lot more attractive and robust. It features longer curved arms that just give the bot more space for it to pick stuff up and throw, preferably not at you for forgetting to oil its joints

Heartland Robotics developing a ‘PC of Robots’

Heartland Robotics is in the midst of something interesting – those who have paid the company a visit would have certainly come across a robot that is rather human-like from the waist up (not in total appearance though), sporting a torso with either one or two arms that have grippers. A camera is located on where the head is supposed to be, and while the robot sports no legs, it is able to get around by a rolling base, but it won’t be able to move autonomously just yet.

Mr. SemProM Robot Handles Packages

The Robotics Innovation Center at DFKI Bremen has posted a video showcasing a package-handling robot using its SemProM (Semantic Product Memory) system. This robot is capable of telling the weight, contents and other details via an RFID chip within the package
